Blue Planet Company Information

Blue Planet Systems aims to mineralize billions of tons of CO2 and store it permanently in the built environment. Their patented mineralization technology is the only known scalable method for capturing and permanently sequestering billions of tonnes of CO2. This process can use dilute CO2 from any source, at any concentration, and convert it into valuable building materials. Each tonne of Blue Planet’s aggregate permanently mineralizes 440 kg of CO2, preventing it from leaking or accumulating in the atmosphere. In January 2024, Blue Planet Systems announced new funding and a strategic collaboration with Marathon Petroleum Corporation. Their technology can capture and permanently store CO2 in aggregate, making it a carbon-negative material with strength, performance, and cost equivalent to standard quarried aggregates. Using Blue Planet’s carbon-sequestered aggregate can be the most effective way to achieve carbon-negative concrete, as aggregate is the largest component of concrete. Their technology can store 20 billion tons of CO2 per year and mimics the earth’s natural process of creating carbonate rocks or limestone. Blue Planet produces two core aggregate products: CaCO3 aggregate, a synthetic limestone containing 44% CO2, and upcycled RCA aggregate, made from waste concrete. Their technology allows for the production of both coarse and fine aggregate. Additionally, Blue Planet’s solar reflecting granules for roofing shingles exceed LEED requirements with a solar reflectance of at least 0.73. They are working with San Francisco Bay Aggregates to design and build the first commercial facility using their patented carbon mineralization technology. Blue Planet’s technology can work with CO2 from various sources, including cement plants, iron and steel plants, natural gas power stations, refineries, and direct air capture. Their process can utilize flue gas directly as well as pure CO2 from DAC or process streams. It is also cheaper than typical post-combustion CCS projects as it does not require purifying, liquefying, or transporting CO2. Blue Planet’s carbon storage is permanent, unlike nature-based capture solutions which may not be permanent due to land use changes or disease.
