Mara Renewables Company Information

Mara Renewables is an Atlantic Canadian producer of unique, naturally-derived nutritional algal oils rich in omega-3s. Their oils are solvent-free, Halal and Kosher certified, and produced by an FSCC 22000-accredited, fully enclosed and controlled process. Mara has isolated a novel marine microalgal strain from the shores of Atlantic Canada, known as ‘T18’, which produces DHA-rich omega-3 fatty acids. Their algal oil is composed of over 400 mg/g DHA, more than 99% triglyceride form, and is naturally rich in omega-7 fatty acids and carotenoids, with a low TOTOX. The oil is generally regarded as safe (GRAS) approved and has received European substantial equivalence. Mara’s omega-3 fatty acids serve as a sustainable and vegan alternative to fish oil, and their products are used in children’s formulas, nutritional supplements, and food applications globally, delivered from their fermentation facility in the UK. Mara’s mission is to build sustainable algae-based biotech through research and development for a cleaner, healthier future, and their vision is to become a leading developer of advanced, sustainable algae-based bio-products. Since 2006, Mara has been optimizing technologies for algal-oil production and employs a proprietary, highly prolific, non-genetically modified algae strain for omega-3 production. The company holds over 15 patent families filed in many world jurisdictions, covering the entire production process, and has obtained regulatory approvals globally, including in Europe and the USA, for supplements, foods, and infant formula. Mara’s Research & Development department consists of over 20 highly-skilled researchers. The company has received several accolades, including making the 2023 Canada’s Sustainability Changemakers list by Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) and receiving the 2022 Cleantech Export Star Award by Export Development Canada (EDC). The European Commission has approved Mara’s Schizochytrium sp. T18 oil as a novel food for use in infant formula, follow-on formula, processed cereal-based foods, and baby foods for infants and young children.
