Knowledge Futures Group

Knowledge Futures Group is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization registered in Massachusetts, founded as a partnership between the MIT Press and the MIT Media Lab. The organization is dedicated to making public knowledge a public good, spotlighting voices and ideas through its platform, Commonplace. It focuses on building a full-stack of technology protocols and products aimed at creating an effective, equitable, and sustainable knowledge economy. Guided by values such as accessibility, conscientiousness, curiosity, egalitarianism, systemic outlook, and sustainability, Knowledge Futures Group implements a bottom-up, community-led approach in developing its products. The organization hosts roughly biannual in-person team retreats at various locations throughout the U.S. and collaborates with members to identify and implement strategies that enable communities to be more effective in their work. Membership benefits include invitations to member events, custom domains for PubPub communities, access to community services, and regular support and consultation. Knowledge Futures Group gratefully acknowledges and thanks all of its members, including universities, foundations, and individual contributors. The organization builds public digital infrastructure that empowers communities to publish documents and data more effectively and control their publication workflow end-to-end with PubPub. It also connects the world’s knowledge through the Underlay. With over 25,000 users contributing to more than 30,000 publications across 3,000+ publishing communities, Knowledge Futures Group works with partners to design for interoperability and to catalyze a distributed ecosystem of development. The organization does not accept funding that would affect its ability to pursue work free of external interference. It offers a 4-day workweek and operates as a remote team, providing industry-standard benefits and perks, including unlimited PTO and the ability to work fully remote.
