Established in 2009, the Institute for Nonprofit News (INN) plays a pivotal role in supporting approximately 450 independent news organizations. These members collectively produce more than 20,000 unique stories each month, which are then shared and republished by over 7,100 other outlets. In 2023, the annual revenue across the INN Network surpassed $600 million, highlighting its significant impact on the media landscape. The network predominantly focuses on local, regional, or state news, with 73% of its newsrooms dedicated to these areas. Additionally, 15% of the newsrooms specialize in covering a single topic in depth, while 67% provide investigative or in-depth explanatory reporting. A notable 75% of the newsrooms engage in editorial collaborations, enhancing the quality and reach of their journalism. Impressively, more than 90% of INN members successfully sustain operations beyond the startup phase, underscoring the network’s stability and the effectiveness of its support structure.
