New England Aquarium

The New England Aquarium, located at 1 Central Wharf, Boston, MA 02110, is renowned for its four-story Giant Ocean Tank, which holds 200,000 gallons of saltwater and includes a Caribbean coral reef exhibit with over 3,000 sculpted coral elements. This tank houses species such as green sea turtles, cownose rays, and lookdowns, and features daily feeding dives at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The Aquarium is home to Myrtle, a green sea turtle that has resided there since 1970. Visitors can interact with cownose rays and epaulette sharks at the Shark and Ray Touch Tank and observe more than 50 African and southern rockhopper penguins in the Penguin Colony, which offers daily presentations and a live webcam for remote viewing. The Simons Theatre screens 3D nature documentaries on a nearly five-story-high screen and provides assistive listening devices and closed captioning for selected films. The Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life conducts marine conservation research, including studies on the impacts of climate change on marine species. The Aquarium also has a dedicated Sea Turtle Hospital for rescuing and rehabilitating sea turtles and offers various animal encounters, such as meet-and-greet sessions with Atlantic harbor seals. Additionally, the Marine Conservation Action Fund supports community-based conservation projects worldwide, and the Larval Fishes Program has successfully raised more than 17 fish species from eggs to adulthood. The Giant Ocean Tank, the first structure built, is 40 feet wide and 23 feet deep, and the rest of the Aquarium was constructed around it.
