Cybera is a pivotal organization operating Alberta’s Research & Education Network, linking local researchers to approximately 100 research networks worldwide. The company offers free cloud computing resources to Alberta innovators through its Rapid Access Cloud, which supports 3,570 users. Cybera’s Applied Data Science Lab for Economic Development collaborates with local businesses on long-term data science projects, having supported 10 different organizations in 2023. Since its inception in 2012, Cybera’s Internet Buying Group has saved members over $5.3 million in network fees and allows bandwidth adjustments on a monthly basis. The ShareIT program provides IT hardware, software, licensing, and services at reduced costs, with cumulative member spending exceeding $100 million since 2017. It also includes professional development and training opportunities. Cybera’s SkillUp platform helps Albertans align their skills with in-demand jobs and find learning opportunities. The Peering Service offers direct connections to major content providers, diverting an average of 50% of commercial internet traffic. The Virtual Firewall Service provides scalable network protection for public sector organizations. The Alberta Rural Connectivity Coalition advocates for universal high-speed internet access, addressing the digital divide and seeking robust funding and regulatory support. Cybera’s Threat Feed for Education platform enhances cybersecurity for schools. In 2020, Cybera’s network transported 45,200 terabytes of data. Additionally, Cybera’s eduroam service offers secure Wi-Fi roaming at the Calgary International Airport for students and researchers.
