KEF Robotics Company Information
KEF Robotics, established in 2018 and based in Pittsburgh, focuses on developing aerial autonomy technologies for aircraft and unmanned aerial systems (UAS). The company’s flagship product, Tailwind software, is designed to provide low-drift and robust visual inertial odometry (VIO) for dynamic flight maneuvers, supporting operations at speeds up to 100 mph and altitudes below 400 feet above ground level (AGL). Tailwind’s capabilities extend to visual navigation in diverse conditions including day, night, and visually degraded environments. The software enables aircraft to operate without human pilots and without GPS, particularly in uncooperative environments. KEF Robotics collaborates with commercial partners and various Department of Defense groups such as the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), Special Operations Command (SOCOM), and the Army and Air Force. The company’s headquarters is equipped with a software development loft, an electronics lab, indoor testing facilities, a bus, and access to a private airport, facilitating comprehensive development and testing of their technologies.
