James S. (Chip) Mahan III

James S. (Chip) Mahan III is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Canapi Ventures, where he is also a managing partner and co-founder. He serves on several fintech and financial services boards, including Apiture, DefenseStorm, and the American Bankers Association. Mahan is a co-founder of notable fintech companies such as nCino, Finxact, and Payrailz. His career in financial services is distinguished by his role as the CEO and chairman of S1 Corporation and his founding of Security First Network Bank, the world’s first internet bank. He launched Cardinal Bancshares, serving as Chairman and CEO, and spent several years with Citizens Union National Bank & Trust Co., where he held positions including President, Chief Operating Officer, and Vice Chairman, eventually becoming Chairman and CEO. Mahan formed an investment group that purchased Citizens Union, later selling it to BankOne Corp. of Columbus, Ohio. He began his career in 1973 at Wachovia Bank & Trust Co. in Winston-Salem, NC. Mahan graduated with a bachelor’s degree in economics from Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. He was ranked as one of the 10 Most Influential Personalities in Financial Services by FutureBanker magazine.
