Karthik Muralidharan

Karthik Muralidharan, born and raised in India, has established a distinguished career in the field of economics. He earned his A.B. in economics summa cum laude from Harvard University and went on to receive an M.Phil. in economics from Cambridge University in the UK. He further solidified his expertise by obtaining a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard. Currently, he holds the prestigious position of Tata Chancellor’s Professor of Economics at the University of California, San Diego. Beyond his academic roles, Muralidharan is deeply involved in practical economic research. He serves as a board member and co-chair of the Education programme at the Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), where he has co-founded and directed scientific research. His work primarily focuses on conducting large-scale field research projects in India, which span various sectors including education, health, and social welfare. His research aims to enhance the quality of public service delivery and the effectiveness of public spending, addressing some of the most pressing challenges in these areas.
