Han Shu, holding Ph.D., M.Eng., and B.S. degrees from MIT, is a distinguished figure in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning. Early in his career, he led BBN’s successful development of a large-vocabulary Mandarin Chinese system for the Hub-5 speech recognition evaluation, a project sponsored by NIST and DARPA. He co-founded Vlingo, which developed advanced speech recognition technology that was integral to Siri and also led the natural language understanding (NLU) stack for Samsung’s S-Voice, reaching over 100 million Galaxy phones. Subsequently, Shu co-founded Wyth, a company later acquired by Airbnb, where he developed mobile personal assistant technology aimed at enhancing collaborative productivity applications. Beyond his entrepreneurial ventures, Shu has led the machine learning and artificial intelligence groups at both Airbnb and DoorDash. His contributions to the field are also marked by his holding of over 25 patents in related technologies.
