Matt Makai serves as the Vice President of Developer Relations and Experience at AssemblyAI, a company he founded with the goal of developing superhuman Speech AI models. Under his leadership, AssemblyAI has raised a total of $115M, with $50M raised in a Series C round led by Accel, representing 90% of the total funds raised in the last 22 months. The company’s latest innovation, the Conformer-2 model, was trained on 1.1 million hours of voice data and has shown to make up to 43% fewer errors on noisy data and nearly 50% accuracy improvement over previous models. Currently, Makai is leading the development of a next-generation Universal model, which will be trained on over 10 million hours of voice data and utilize Google’s new TPU chips. AssemblyAI processes over 10TB of voice data daily, serving over 25 million inference calls, and has over 10,000 new organizations signing up for its API each month. Customers include notable companies such as Fireflies.ai, Veed, TypeForm, Close, Loop Media, and CallRail. The new capital will be used for research, new model development, training compute, market expansion, and team building, with key hires from prestigious organizations like DeepMind, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Meta.
